The Perl Journal has stopped publishing. The website is still there and the archives are still available under the Dr. Dobbs "Lightweight Languages" headings, but CMP decided to finally let TPJ pass on after my last article, "Use Perl 6 Now".
TPJ published my first two Perl articles, and did quite a bit for the Perl community. I'm certainly going to miss it.
Sad to see it end.

This is, in my opinion, sad news.

Sad indeed. Like yourself, I got my start in professional writing in TPJ, when Jon Orwant suggested I write about AutoLoader and AutoSplit. I still have my complete collection of the print version.

Coincidence? I think not.
OMG, they killed TPJ...
Update: Boy is my face red! After reading wazoox exellent suggestion below, the fog in my mind parted enough to realize that I had in fact just subscribed to TPR and not TPJ. Relief and embarassment on top of the loss of TPJ all at once!

Unless they sold the rights to the name "Perl Journal" to CMP, then the fate of TPJ is up to the Perl community, not CMP.
I'm not sure who you mean by "they". CMP completely owns TPJ and everything associated with it. There is no other party to this decision.
The folks at CMP kept it alive much longer than they should have, business-wise. A lot of people worked on it as an extra job assignment, and I think they did a pretty good job.
The name is just a name, though. The Perl community already has another print magazine, which I started several years ago when I knew this day would come. :)

Wow. Deja Vu!
