Perl Competitions and Addition to PM system

Hello,

I've been looking to start a programing competition for perl at my univ to spread the word and get people learning the language. Are there any programs out there already for perl competitions? Is there any way to get free swag as prizes? either from PM or other establishments.

Ok topic 2. As a competition enthusiast, I think it would be much appreciated to post competition like questions into its own section on PM. It can allow us to see how different people would tackle a situation and challange programers who are sitting around bored (on a teacher strike) looking for something to do

Anyways let me know what you think.

Have you seen Seekers of Perl Wisdom? People post a variety of questions, some easy, some hard, some real-world, some conceptual, some closely related to Perl, some only loosely. Then hundreds of people around the world post solutions (or critiques to other people's solutions) in a competition for "XP" -- a form of peer acclaim.

It's a great challenge for programmers who are sitting around bored looking for something to do.

(grin)

On a serious note, if you do organize something in the real world and want swag, I'd suggest approaching TPF or else working through a nearby Perl Mongers group that might have people with connections who can help.

I almost would say that questions or quizes might be better as meditations than SoPW (you're not strictly looking for help, you're offering an exercise to improve ones Perl skills), but that's just me.

On the topic of quizzes, I seem to remember there used to be one that MJD ran (but that got derailed by his work on HOP, I think :). The Ruby people have rubyquiz.com that's posted to ruby-talk semi-regularly, and I want to say someone used to do something similar on the fun-with-perl list. Might be interesting to take some of the Ruby quiz problems and compare solutions . . . :)

Ya SoPW is an excellent way to improve your abilities in the many diversities of perl. But it is true problem driven as opposed to strictly skill building. There is a post up that has 6 different simple questions that were part of a challenge. the problem is i want more :)

See http://perl.plover.com/qotw/. Just working through the old quizzes could be a lot of fun. In addition to the ones listed on the website, there were a few posted on the mailing list.

Why not take problems from some of the online contests?

I particularly like Project Euler, though there are many other sources.

thanks thats a good site.

I think it would be awsome if we took questions and compaired answers somewhere on PM. Get to see all the obfuscated code and good programing techniques

I do like the general idea, and many of the resulting suggestions, particularly Project Euler. I would advise against, however, calling for a new section on PerlMonks. ;-)

If you are looking for some relatively simple or straightfoward exercises to get you started, try Super Searching for "homework" and/or "exercises".

Ya i hear ya. PM has a lot of material on it which can really bombard a new user. But the idea in general can only improve the perl community by making the language easier to learn, and even giving incentive to learn it with the XP system.

maybe this is getting off topic. But under the pedagogue group made mention of:

"The pmdevils haven't really finished building the section yet so currently they can't do much, but soon a new schoolhouse will be built..."

this sounds promising. If this is something being seriously built i would imagine they would have something similar to what ive mentioned.

I cant seem to find any info on this. anyone have some insight on this?
