I am pleased to announce that the new server hosting perlmonk.org is ready for business. If you had an account on the old system, or you'd like a free Linux account, email either jcwren@perlmonk.org or petruchio@perlmonk.org. I am about to leave town for the day, so if you write me soon there may be a delay in account creation.
jc managed to recover a lot of the old user directories. If yours was rescued, it should automatically be in your new directory upon account creation. If it's not... you can ask about it, but it's probably gone.

- Can someone else come in, make a change, and be reasonably certain no bugs were introduced?
Personally, I think it is quite useful in case someone wants to store Perl Monks related material at a place where it is related to the site.
Oh, and I think it is not a misspelling to use perlmonk.org - it is functionally different from perlmonks.org because here the emphasys is on the community thus it's perlmonks - there the emphasys is on the user's own services place - thus perlmonk.org.

Allow me to clarify (although I thought dragonchild should have been around long enough by now to realize what's going on).
perlmonk.org is not a "site" per se, but a server. I provide Unix shell accounts, Perl, PHP, Ruby, C, etc, web services and databases (mySQL and postGres). There are no charge for these accounts, and reasonable terms of use (no p0rn, no commercial ventures, no serving warez or mp3s).
Many perlmonks.org users don't have access to a Unix shell account. Many others cannot design and host websites because of ISP restrictions, cost reasons, or an extremely thin pipe (think dialup).
perlmonk.org is an Athlon-64 2800+ CPU with a gig of memory, 250GB of disk, and is hung on a T1 provided by a friend of mine at no charge (we don't have the full T1, as it's his VoIP line at home). I restrict most accounts to 25MB a day web traffic, and generally request that people try to keep their disk usage reasonable.
perlmonk.org does not "compete" with perlmonks.org, because there's nothing to "compete" about. They are completely disconnected in functionality.
I've been providing this service for almost 5 years. For several years, I paid for an ISDN line for the server, and provided all the server equipment. ar0n (a long lost user) provided the first donation, a 60GB Maxtor that dies in December 2005. A handful of generous people have answered the call for financial donations to cover the new server equipment, although I'm still a little in the hole on it (normally I'd pay for it and not worry about it, but contract gigs have been tight, and the wallet is thin).
Petruchio is my co-manager of the server, and has been exceedingly helpful in configuring the new server, and managing some of the more distasteful aspects (namely, postGrosspostGres).
So there you have the real info, straight from the horses mouth. Or his keyboard. Or whatever.

Just a suggestion: if the default page one gets upon visiting http://perlmonks.org contained that same information, people like dragonchild who dont know about it could find out simply by visiting. (I believe the old site had that, so I assume that this will be rectified as you find the tuits for it.)

Is this the system that hosted tinymicros.com which provided the PerlMonks stats? If so, is it anticipated that tinymicros will return, or has it gone to the great bit bucket in the sky?

No, it's up. Apparently apache blew it's brains out on the vhost that serves the outside world. The local vhost was running fine, so I didn't realize there was a problem. I restarted apache, and all is well.
