Professional Perl Bodies

With this little query I didn't know whether I was seeking Perl wisdom or meditating or simply after some discussion.

I have heard of such bodies as the British Computer Society and the Association of Computer Professionals that permit the use of letters after your name once you join to show that you are a member of a professional body.

Does anything like this exist specifically for Perl?

Nope. Having a CPAN account is the closest thing to it.

I guess you could use "CCC" (certified cpan contributor) and "TLA" (three letter acronym) with no problem. {grin}

Pretty good idea, to use CCC. The abreviation of the famous german hackers mothership, Chaos Computer Club . Well, like many hackers of the dark ages, even this club became a serious, non-criminal organization with a good reputation in our days. (grin)

Is piracy a crime (I ask while I am listening to a CCC mp3 cd)?

Yes, piracy is a major crime. Since most countries signed the diverse treaties on the Law of the Sea , you maybe safe in Norh Corea, but not in many more countries. Better you do not asked here, but the United Nations "Law of the Sea Commission". I am assuming you got this CD by piracy in international water . In domestic water and your bathtub, the law may be different.

Nursing is the worst at this. My wife is an R.N, B.S, M.A., F.N.P. (I think I'm forgetting some) and it's customary to append all the letters. This is partially a reaction to nursing being downvalued in relation to "medicine" (which according to the official line is only physicians).

Maybe we should all start putting P.M.X.P.Z. after our names where "Z" is I=Initiate ... S=Saint.

Seriously though, participation in Perlmonks or Perlmongers, or CPAN or other Perl community related organizations does IMHO belong on a resume. Even reviewers who don't have the foggiest what any of those are, can still get a sense of the extent of your participation.

The Perl Advocacy page is a little sparse, if this is an issue that concerns you, maybe you could contribute to it.

How would you tell Acolyte from Abbot or Scribe from Saint?
a vs. A and s vs. S?

well put. We shouldn't have TLA, but TCN (Three Character Noise) after our names.

You could always try J.A.P.H :)

For the experienced Perl programmer.
P.M. (Perl Monger/Monk)
For the Perl community member.
P.O.D. (Perl Official Developer)
For the perl source code developer.

Employers who make applicant processing decisions based on the letters that the applicant places after his/her name, as opposed to a real analysis of knowledge, skills and abilities, get what they deserve. Many software developers look great on paper, but put them behind a keyboard and it's a disaster.

I agree that qualifications on paper are nothing compared to actual skill and being able to get the job done.

However... Qualifications on paper can get you into the door at which point you can impress upon potential employers your actual skill and ability to get said job done.
