I'm currently making the french translation of the node 237040. So I need feedback from french readers before I link it to the main entry point.

Links to original and translated node:

'node 243870' => 'Qu'est-ce que PerlMonks ?'

I'll post following links to this thread as soon as available.

Thanks

Updated (1): Taken account of mpeppler remarks (less pedantic style now). :-)
Updated (2): Taken account of allolex remarks (quite better french!)
Updated (3): Taken account of theon remarks (even more better french!!)
Updated (4): Taken account of CountZero remarks (typo between several version of the sentence).
Updated (5): Taken account of Not_a_Number remarks (bad accentuation and better syntax).

The node has been promoted to stable and is linked to the FAQ summary.

Looks good!

I might have used "Par ailleur" instead of "incidemment", but that's really a detail, and in nate's comment I might translate "My official title in the company" as "Mon titre officiel dans ma societe" rather than "la societe".

I think "que" should be removed in "...plus simple d'usage que possible" (it's either "aussi ... que possible" or "le plus/moins ... possible"). This one still sounds strange, I would have translated like this: "Une tentative de rendre l'apprentissage de Perl aussi facile à pratiquer et aussi peu intimidant que possible".

And in the next one, I would replace "ceux désirant" by "ceux qui désirent".

I'm not a native French speaker (but as we Belgians live in an officially trilingual country we have to know some French), so don't take this as gospel.

I don't agree with the 3rd one. "He is an engineer" => "Il est ingénieur", not "Il est un ingénieur".

As I said I bow before anyone with better knowledge of French.

Don't want to be too pedantic and as said allolex it is your translation, however I don't really like:

  • "Notre but est d'avoir un coin sympa d'internet...", I would replace it by "Notre but est d'avoir un coin sympa sur internet..." or "...sur l'internet..." -- know it is only a minor modification.
  • "...constitueront une imposante archive documentaire de questions-réponses..." where I don't know if you can say that an "archive" is "imposante" and I would rather use "considérable" instead (given by a crappy dictionary). This would make something like "...une archive documentaire considérable de questions-réponses".

Hope it is helpfull, good luck for your work...

"...une archive documentaire considérable de questions-réponses"

IMHO, I would prefer "imposante" because it suggests more a big-sized thing than "considérable" which suggests an important thing.

Just a couple of remarks as I'm not a native French speaker.

Mon premier titre officiel dans ma société fût 'Moine Perl'.

'fût' is the past subjunctive of 'être', but here the simple past (no circumflex) is required.

Les monastères sont connus dans la culture comme des lieux de savoir...

I think what the original 'culturally' means would be better rendered by something like 'D'un point de vue culturel, les monastères...'

Par ailleurs, toutes les questions posées...

The English here is 'eventually', which I would translate here by something like 'avec le temps'.

One small thought came over...
Can the "Back to Perl Monks FAQ" line be translated to French as well? I think it would look more authentic.
(Only to the pages where French translations have been made.. OfCourse).

De nouveau au Perl Monks FAQ.

You're right, I should have translated it (as "Retour à la FAQ PerlMonks"(see note)).

IMHO, it would have meant that the 'node 237040' node had also been translated in french, instead of collecting all the links to translated pages. That's why I prefer not making it now. This may change sometimes.

____
note: This is usually extremely difficult to translate abbreviations without changing them or their meaning, but sometimes good analogies are available: "Frenquently Asked Questions" is used to be translated in french as "Foire Aux Questions". Strictly translated, this refers to a bear garden of questions which is more or less the case for FAQs :-)
